10 reasons why I loved college

My mom, my sisters, and I had a girls' lunch to celebrate my sister, Sarah, going away to college this week.  So sad that she's leaving (and going so far away)....but excited that she's pursuing a career in the arts.  She's going to be so amazing.

Sending Sarah off to college made me think about my college days at East Carolina University.  My grandfather went there, my dad went there, I went there, and all my siblings (except for Sarah...black sheep) have gone there.  I loved ECU and loved the college experience...and here are 10 reasons why.

1.  I was able to take at least one dance class every single day.  How awesome is that?!

2.  My XTerra.  What a fun car to drive around Greenville with my windows rolled down, listening to Elisa on full blast.

3. Boulevard Bagel.  My taste buds will never be able to accept Bruegger's because of how amazing Boulevard Bagel is.  I used to order a whole wheat bagel with strawberry cream cheese at least 4 times a week.  (good thing I was dancing so much)

4.  College was all about me.  And that's totally ok...because it's kind of supposed to be.  Yes, I had a job, church responsibilities, and homework/studying...but it was still about me.  If I wanted to take a 4 hour nap in the afternoon between class and rehearsals, I could.  If I wanted to take off at 10pm to get a Krispy Kreme, I could.

5.  Despite (or because of?) college being all about me, it really helped me grow up.  I was responsible for getting myself to class, for showing up to work, and for being responsible.  So grateful to those 4 years for helping me become the person I am today.

6.  Fall at ECU is absolutely gorgeous.  They have the crunchiest leaves, and it's just beautiful.  The first cool breeze of the season always gives me nostalgia.

7.  My apartment.  My apartment was kind of amazing in Greenville.  (and my brother and sister both lived there after me).  I was such a slob in high school.  Those of you who know me now are having a hard time wrapping your brain around that one....but I was!  Having my own apartment and being in charge of decorating and cleaning it made me the neat freak I am today.

8.  Being a dance education major.  This decision is in my top 5 best decisions of all time.

9.  Football games!!  I honestly didn't do a ton of watching the actual game, but the atmosphere is super fun.  My dad and uncle would drive a gigantic van to Greenville, and me and my family/friends would pile in to go to the games together.

10.  Meeting people who I will love forever.  My soul mates.  I met my greatest friends during those 4 years, who are still my dear friends today.

Best wishes to everyone going to college this fall!  What a fantastic time it is.  Stay focused on what's most important and have the most amazing 4 (or 4ish) :-) years!

Oh my gosh! My husbad went to ECU (may have even been there while you were there) and up until this year we have had season tickets to football games. I LOVE the atmosphere - didn't know a thing about football before I met him, but I really really loved it. Such a fun period in life.

The beginning of Fall always reminds me of college too! Something about the leaves changing reminds me of walking in the crisp air through campus.

I love this! Totally agree with the slob to neat freak thing.

I am obsessed with a clean house where my room was barley ever walkable, and I agree with the "me" factor being one of the BEST things about a college experience!

I've been giving my younger sister all the tips about college and what to do and not do. I'm sure she appreciates it... But I mean, we older sisters only go to college so we can help prepare the younger siblings, right?! ;)

I couldn't agree more!!! It is so fun to make those lifelong friendships and take care of yourself. What I miss the most? Those 4 hour naps (whenever you want em!) and donut runs you speak of ;)

That is so awesome that you got to major in dance. It wasn't even offered where I went. Boo. I liked being able to do whatever I wanted though. My friend and I always went to Sonic for root beer floats and then would just randomly drive around.

ECU is the best! I loved free movies and concerts, free t-shirts for everything, Pirate waffles, etc. My husband and I enjoyed Greenville a lot; when we moved we actually made a list of places we missed there.

I've been reminiscing about college as well. Those were the days....no responsibilities (besides going to class), independence, freedom....sigh....

I miss college a lot! Getting to control my own schedule and have time off in-between classes was great, opposed to working 8-hour days straight now :)

Ah! I loved college for practically all of the same reasons (and wish I had danced more in college)! Good luck to your sister (mine was totally the black sheep as far as college choices go as well)!

Ooh college... I was just talking about this with my sister in law tonight... how we get a little sad and reminiscent each time someone we know starts college for the first time. You know... dreaming for those fun times again. Goodness college really was run!

College went by too fast! Such a fun time! I am craving that bagel you are talking about. After high school swim practice before I used to stop for that same type of bagel at a local shop every Friday!!

You have me DYING to be back at school! Ugh, hate that being on the quarter system means we don't start until late September... but it also means we don't get out until mid-June! Excited to be back :)

Oh heeeeeeey... I only did one semester of college. Ha! Annnnnd I never moved out before I got married. I do wish I had been able to experience that, but at the same time? I've heard horror stories of roommates and I'm glad I didn't have to go through that.
I should know this... but do you dance now?

I love college so very much. I'm sad it's over, but I work in higher ed, so at least I'm close to students and campus allllll the time! Football season and growing up are some of my favorite things!

Did your sister end up going to the U of U? If so I hope she loves it there. Sometimes I wish that I had lived away from home during college, but I think being home was better for my family. Being close to UMD this fall is making me so nostalgic for college.

Just found your blog via Because Shanna Said So and I'm so glad I did. :) We're Greenville-ians (or whatever) right now! Transplants from VA, but here, nonetheless! I also saw your post on Chelsea's J.Crew styling session! I met her at the grand opening of The Clothes Hound! Are you still in GV? Or did you move to the Raleigh area? Small world. :)
