Twyla Tharp's, The Creative Habit, is my #1 go-to book when I'm in need of some inspiration. She is a creative genius and each time I read her book I take away something new.
I'm continuing my monthly segment where I have YOU answer a specific question for me. I loved the feedback this month on what book/movie inspires you, and here are some of your answers.
1. I would be embarrassed to let you see my copy of Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Tear stained, coffee stained, notes scribbled in the margins. I have read it a million times and each time I cry at the same places & underline the same quotes. Mitch Albom has a way with words that leaves me in awe. An example, "... all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time." Sit on that one for a minute. Wow! He writes that he wrote this book so that "people who felt unimportant here on earth--realize, finally, how much they mattered and how they were loved." It is a story of inspiration, hope, love, tragedy. It is simply amazing.

2. We Are Marshall. This movie gives me chills every time I watch it. It's just so amazing how they rebuilt the program from literally nothing after such a tragedy. We're huge ECU football fans, always have been, and my senior year of HS my dad and brother and I drove up to Huntington, WV to watch ECU play Marshall. It is still one of my favorite trips to date. We went to the crash site as well, and it'll take your breath away. It's all grown over and if there wasn't a sign to tell you what it was, you'd never know. But there was a stillness there...it made an impact, for sure. Reminds you to never take life for granted!
~Haley from I Can Only Imagine
3. A book that always inspires me is The Great Gatsby. It has a great lesson about not changing yourself for others. The main character, Jay Gatsby, creates a whole new personality and lifestyle just to impress a former girlfriend, and it ends up being a huge mistake.
~Robin from Our Carolina Days
4. The movie that inspires me is The Blind Side... I love that it is based on a true story. It just makes me what to be a better person and help people in any way I can. I want to be just like Sandra Bullock's character {Leigh Ann Tuhoy}- she's sassy and SO kindhearted, and will not let anything stop her from taking care of her family.
~Lori Williams from A Crazy Walk on the Safe Side
5. How to Win Friends and Influence People. This book helps anyone who reads it. You can use it for business, society, family, or friends. if you follow what it teaches, it will change you. There's not much literature out there that isn't religious that has that effect, but this one nails it.
~Jake Edwards from Insurance Agent's Wife
Great books and movies, right? What would you add to this list?
Happy Friday, friends!!

Ooo..great choices! The movie Titanic inspires me to live life to the fullest and treat each day as a gift. I also love the book Kisses from Katie. This girl is my age and has made such a huge impact in the world. She's inspirational!
I need to read Five People You Meet In Heaven - I heard about it long ago and never got around to it. New follower - also if you haven't - check out The Harbinger - I am reading it now. Pretty good book - I heard the speaker the other night at one of the local churches.
Thank you for sharing my response. :)
Looks like I need to watch some movies and read some books as I haven't read/watched any of these!!!!!!! I'm behind on the times!
I LOVE We Are Marshall! Need to get to reading some fo these! :) Thanks for recommendations.

Let's see, for a book, The Count of Monte Cristo; his letter at the end gets me every time.
Movie: Amazing Grace. William Wilberforce was an amazing man, not only in what he accomplished, but the fact that he had the perseverance to see it through. Also, The Irish Guard Pipe Band playing Amazing Grace . . . love.
I read/watched three out of the five. This is a great list!
I'll have to check out The Creative Habit, never read that one. Great post!
Great Gatsby and the Blind Side are always great options!

The Great Gatsby is, and always will be, one of my favorite books. Are you as excited for the new movie as I am?! :D
You are the best!!! Thanks so much for including mine :)
I love love love The Blind Side and I've seen the original Great Gatsby movie and loved that as well, but I've never gotten a chance to read the book. Nor have I gotten the chance to read The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Both on my list to do over Christmas break. You know they're coming out with a new Great Gatsby with Leo DiCaprio as Gatsby?!! Comes out in the spring I think...so excited!
The movie A League of Their Own was a huge influence on me when I was a softball-playing teenager. It is still one of my top three favorite movies.
I loooove The Blind Side...it just touches my heart. I have a friend that reminds me so much of Sandra Bullock's character in the movie!

How fun! Some great choices. Now days when I read it is more often just for entertainment then be truly inspired-- though I do like books like that too :)
I love your picks! i have read almost all of them...not the first one, but maybe I should. I am putting it on my reading list!
I love all of these! Such great choices and good reasons :) what a great idea for a segment!
such good choices!!!
A Severe Mercy is one of the most touching and powerful books I have ever read. It changed my life. I am particularly fond of memoirs/biographies. Human life is always inspirational.
Hi Ashley! New follower here. I have a boy right in the middle of your two boys and LOVE having a boy. I'd be completely fine if (like you) I had two boys. :)
Number 5 is such a good book that my husband had to read it in law school! I love all of those.
This is tough because I use both as mental escapes so I can leave the real world and issues behind for a while. If I had to choose probably Valley of the Dolls and Once is Not Enough by Susann because she was so skilled, focused and glamorous. And How to Marry a Millionaire/Seven Year Itch for my films. I love old films so they all inspire me really but these comedies put me in a better mental space.

The Blind Side is awesome--it makes me realize that there are truly selfless people in the world!
For me personally its Memoirs of a Geisha. I read it in two nights. The story of a girl that conquers all odds and obstacles is amazing to me.

After thinking about your question like all night and dreaming about it I woke this morning realizing I do have a form of inspiration that doesn't involve escapism and that is the television show Felicity. Her love for academics matches my own and her (and her friends) determination to study hard and do well gives me a kick to get going.
Also the book How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less by Cal Newport really gets me into tunnel vision while I'm taking classes. My grades shoot way up and I'm happier because I'm not only focused but my priorities are in line.

The books that really stay with me are the children's books - like The Phantom Tollbooth - with quite simple stories but communicate a much deeper message about improving your outlook and perservering. Become your own hero and your own champion :)
five people you will meet in heaven is on my list... and has been for a while... i need to get back to reading.
thanks for featuring my response :) such a fun series you are doing!
What a great prompt! Hmm... I love the great gatsby! I'd have to think about what inspires me! :)
Most of these books are my favourites too. Though one I keep going back to for the story and the writing style is Gerald Durrel's My Family and Other Animals. My absolute favourite book!
I maybe probably most definitely don't read enough books that aren't YA. One of my favorites since high school is Redeeming Love.
